Intercepts

Inquire about the availability of documents in alternate formats.

Intercepts are payments that would normally go to a parent that are "intercepted" by the child support agency to pay either current or past-due support (arrears).

Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Tax Refunds

Intercepts the paying parents' federal income tax refund each year and forwards it to the child support agency. The federal refunds can only be applied to arrears (past-due support) owed to the county.

Franchise Tax Board Refunds

Intercepts the paying parents' state income tax refund each year and forwards it to the child support agency. The state tax refund can be applied against the current month's payment as well as arrears (past-due support) - but unlike federal refunds, the money goes to the family's arrears first, if there are any, then to the county's.

Unemployment Insurance Benefits (UIB)

Up to 25% of weekly UIB payments can be intercepted from the insurance provider and sent to the child support agency.

Disability Insurance Benefits (DIB)

Up to 25% of DIB payments can be intercepted from the insurance provide and sent to the child support agency.

Worker's Compensation Benefits

Not really an "intercept" -- a wage withholding order may be served on the insurance company to collect up to 25% of the monthly benefit amount being paid to the injured worker. A lien will also be filed to attempt to collect a lump-sum amount should the injured worker receive a settlement.

Lottery Winnings

Intercepts lottery winnings and sends them to the child support agency.

Franchise Tax Board Support Collection Program

FTB locates wages, bank accounts, and other assets and seizes them for payment of child support.

State Issued Licenses: Including Occupational and Drivers Licenses

Occupational and/or Drivers Licenses may be submitted for suspension if a paying parent is not making regular monthly payments.

Passports

U.S. Secretary of State may not issue paying parent a passport or may revoke or restrict a current passport if support arrears are owed on any of the paying parent’s case(s).
